About Artek

The Finnish design house Artek, whose core products are furniture and lamps by Alvar Aalto, is part of the Swiss design company Vitra in Birsfelden. The design company Artek was founded in 1935 by the architect Alvar Aalto and his wife Aino Aalto, the art patron Maire Gullichsen and the art historian Nils-Gustav Hahl. From the outset, the idea was to sell furniture and promote modern living culture through exhibitions. The driving force was the architect Aalto, who also lent his name to the products.

„Artek supports the design and individualization of an open, informal working environment. We present transversal furniture that moves naturally between work and living spaces and can be flexibly coordinated as a broad system of tables, chairs and stools.“

The core of Artek’s product range consists of furniture and lamps by Alvar Aalto. The rights to Ilmari Tapiovaara’s furniture collection have also been added. Artek also works with international architects, designers and artists such as Eero Aarnio, Shigeru Ban, Harri Koskinen, Enzo Mari and Tobias Rehberger.

Much Artek furniture conveys a relaxed familiarity and cannot be assigned to any clear social identity or functional category. The table remains a table, regardless of whether it serves as an office, dining or work surface. And the stool is a stool, a seat, a shelf or presentation furniture. Artek furniture therefore moves quite naturally between living and working spheres and different areas of application.

Below is a product overview of the Artek collection. You can find the complete company profile here.

Materiality of the Artek collection

Artek works predominantly with natural materials that have stood the test of time and are familiar to mankind – especially wood. They have a genuine beauty, a warm, homely aura, are eco-friendly and age gracefully. These qualities are in high demand at home and in the office context, enriching the traditional range of materials and creating a multifaceted environment.

The Aalto collection is made of Finnish birch wood. The special quality of Finnish wood is partly due to the high growth of the trees, which is typical of mixed forests and gives the wood a particularly regular grain. The light „blond“ color of the wood is influenced by the mineral content and the nature of the Nordic soil and is enhanced by slow drying of the felled logs in the fresh air. The logs used by Artek are up to eighty years old. The material of the furniture produced today is therefore as old as the company itself.

Flexibility

The Aalto collection is based on the idea of standardized individual parts that make up a broad system of tables, chairs and stools. The products can be easily combined and coordinated with each other. Product formats such as table sizes and heights are flexible. The surfaces and colors of the products can also be individually adapted for small projects to complement a tailor-made furnishing concept or to underline the customer’s identity.

Designer: Daniel Rybakken – Year: 2017

Each mirror in the collection has two faces that are 124 degrees apart. In this way, the mirrors reflect unexpected views of their surroundings, with each side revealing a different perspective. Anyone looking directly into the mirror will see no reflection at all. The mirrors are both functional objects and a playful contemplation of reflection, light and image by designer Daniel Rybakken. The 124° mirrors can be attached to any vertical surface or stand freely on a horizontal surface. Simple and elegant in design, the 124° mirrors are available in three different sizes, including a version with an integrated wooden shelf.

À PROPOS D’ARTEK

Artek was founded in Helsinki in 1935 by four young idealists: Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl. Their object was de “ vendre des meubles et de promouvoir une culture moderne de la vie par des expositions and other educational tools“.

Fidèle to the radical spirit of its founders, Artek remains today an innovator in the world of modern design, developing new products at the intersection of design products at the intersection of design, architecture and art.

The Artek collection is made up of furniture, accessories and accessories conçus par des maîtres finlandais et des designers internationaux de premier plan. It is synonymous with clarity, functionality and poetic simplicity.

The characteristic feature of Alvar Aalto’s work is the system of standardized components individual standardized components that can be reconstituted to form a complete collection complète de meubles.

While the origins of the idea can be found in the sun, the collection Aalto goes further: the products can be easily combined and coordinated and coordinated with each other, the formats, such as the widths and heights of the table table sizes and heights are flexible, and the surfaces and colors can be can be personalized even for small projects.

Alvar Aalto was fascinated by wood, eager to explore its possibilities, to discover where its limits lay and to discover what modern production methods could achieve.
