TOLOMEO models

The Tolomeo luminaire family has been constantly evolving since 1987. Several model lines and numerous special models offer a varied selection for every taste and for the most diverse spatial requirements. Quality and design have remained unchanged – as a sign of Artemide’s appreciation of a form that enjoys unique popularity.

The Tolomeo family

The filigree construction, the simple yet elegant aluminum look and the conical lampshade are the unmistakable, archetypal characteristics of the Tolomeo.

The Tolomeo table lamp has been one of the most popular desk lamps since its creation in 1987. It combines quality, design and functionality. The bracket with spring balancing system allows the lamp arm to be infinitely adjusted to the desired height. The lamp head can also be rotated through 360 degrees. Tolomeo consists of an aluminum-coated steel base, while the luminaire structure and diffuser are made of aluminum. The mounting is interchangeable and can be made using the table base, a clamp or screws.

Tolomeo LED

LEDs are particularly energy-efficient and are characterized by a long service life and optimum light output. In the Tolomeo LED version, the desk lamp by Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina is combined with this technology. The typical design and classic functions in the form of the infinitely adjustable lamp arm and the rotatable lamp head are retained. The model is optionally equipped with a motion sensor.
Tolomeo Tunable White combines the advantages of LED technology with those of the Tunable White system, which enables the color temperature to be regulated from warm light to cold light.

Tolomeo micro

The Tolomeo micro is the smallest version of the table lamp. This model is characterized in particular by the fact that it is available in many different colors to match any ambience – from red and orange to blue, green and turquoise, through to bronze and gold. The typical design is still representative of the model and the classic adjustable lamp arm and the rotatable lamp head also ensure optimum functionality in this small version.

Tolomeo basculante

The Tolomeo basculante from 2004 is an elegant version of the classic by Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina. The typical design is complemented by a modern lampshade with a diameter of 18 cm, which is available in two different materials: either parchment paper stabilized with plastic or grey silk satin. The body is also made of robust metal and aluminum. The lamp arm, which is infinitely adjustable thanks to the spring balancing system, is also retained.

Tolomeo mega tavolo

The special feature of this table lamp is the large lampshade, which is available in three different diameters – 32 cm, 36 cm or 42 cm. The material variation includes parchment paper stabilized with plastic or is made of grey and black silk satin. Despite its size, the lamp head can be rotated in all directions. The spring balancing system also allows the lamp arm to be infinitely adjusted. This model is attached directly to the table using a clamp or screws.

Tolomeo floor lamps

At the same time as creating the table lamp, Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina also designed a floor lamp, which is available as a large and small version, as well as a reading lamp. All models consist of an aluminum-coated steel base. The adjustable arms are made of shiny aluminium, while the adjustable lamp head is made of matt anodized aluminium. The special feature of the Tolomeo terra and the Micro version is that they have two joints and can therefore be adjusted to almost any position.

Tolomeo basculante lettura

The reading version of the Tolomeo basculante has an adjustable joint. A spring balancing system enables the lamp arm to be infinitely adjusted. Regardless of its orientation, the shade is usually set vertically. The elegant version of the lampshade has a diameter of 18 cm and is made of either parchment paper stabilized with plastic or grey silk satin.

The Tolomeo mega was created in 2002 and is one of the largest models. For maximum flexibility, it has a spring balancing system and two joints made of polished aluminum. The beautiful lampshade is made of either black or grey silk satin or parchment paper stabilized with plastic. It is also available in three sizes with different diameters – 32 cm, 36 cm and 42 cm. The base and the adjustable lamp arms are made of shiny aluminum.

Tolomeo pendant lights

Tolomeo decentrata sospensione

The Tolomeo pendant light is characterized in particular by its different shades. One version consists of the classic shade made of matt aluminum. Other versions are available with plastic-reinforced parchment paper and gray silk satin. With the latter two versions, you can also choose between different sizes – the available diameters are 24 cm, 32 cm and 36 cm. The adjustable arms are made of shiny aluminum, the joints of polished aluminum.

Tolomeo due bracci pergamena sospensione

This special pendant lamp with two shades was created in 2005. The rod is height-adjustable and the lamp arms can be aligned differently thanks to the spring balancing system. Regardless of this, the two shades remain in a vertical position. The shades are available in four different sizes, with diameters of 24 cm, 32 cm, 36 cm or 42 cm, and in different materials, either in parchment paper stabilized with plastic or in grey silk satin. Joints and arms are made of aluminum.

Tolomeo mega sospensione

The pendant light from 2007 changes the classic Tolomeo design to a modern one. The suspension is more delicate and is made of aluminum and transparent injection-molded methacrylate. The absence of joints gives the model an elegant appearance. The shade is available with a diameter of 42 cm and 52 cm. It is also available in grey or black silk satin, as well as in parchment paper stabilized with plastic.

In addition to the table and floor lamps, the Tolomeo is also available as a wall lamp. The typical design is retained and only changes insofar as the base is omitted and the luminaire is mounted on the wall. The polished aluminum arms and joints are very flexible thanks to a spring balancing system and can be infinitely adjusted to any desired position.

Tolomeo basculante parete

The elegant shade of the wall light has a diameter of 18 cm and is available in two material versions – parchment paper stabilized with plastic and grey silk satin. Regardless of the alignment of the lamp arm, which is infinitely adjustable and particularly flexible thanks to the spring balancing system, the shade is generally aligned vertically. The wall bracket and lamp arms are made of polished and shiny aluminum.

Tolomeo faretto

The Tolomeo faretto is the small version of the Tolomeo wall light and was created in 1995. Its base is made of shiny aluminium, its head of matt anodized aluminium. The lamp head is rotatable and can therefore be moved to different positions. This model is available with or without an on/off switch.

Tolomeo diffusore parete

The shade of the Tolomeo diffusore wall light is available in three different sizes with different diameters – 18 cm, 24 cm and 32 cm. It is also available in parchment paper reinforced with plastic or in silk satin. The lamp arm made of highly polished aluminum is equipped with a joint that allows the shade to rotate by approx. 30 degrees.

Tolomeo Pinza

Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina designed this small, versatile luminaire back in 1995. The head is made of matt anodized aluminium, the holder of polished aluminium. The specific feature of this luminaire is the possibility of flexible use thanks to its attachment with a steel clamp. This allows it to be fixed in different locations as required. The micro version of the model is also available in various colors and therefore offers countless design options.

Tolomeo Outdoor

The outdoor version of the Tolomeo floor lamp is equipped with materials that meet the requirements for outdoor use. The design of the Tolomeo lampione is based on a historic street lamp. An extension is the Tolomeo paralume, which creates a domestic ambience with the additional lampshade. The shade is made of a synthetic material suitable for outdoor use, which is visually reminiscent of jute and blends in perfectly with its natural surroundings.

The special feature of this outdoor luminaire is its flexibility of use. Thanks to the hook attachment, it can be installed quickly and almost anywhere. The lantern version is based on the design of a historic street lamp. For domestic flair, the model can be extended with a lampshade to create the Tolomeo paralume. Adapted to outdoor conditions, this shade is made of plastic, which nevertheless has a natural appearance thanks to its jute look.

Tolomeo lampione/paralume sospensione outdoor

The pendant light for outdoor use is available in two versions. The Lampione version is based on the look of historical street lamps. To create a more domestic ambience, the model can be extended with a lampshade to create the Paralume version. The shade appears to be made of natural jute, but is actually made of a synthetic material that meets the requirements of outdoor use.

Tolomeo XXL

The special feature of this model from 2009 is not only its size, but also its flexibility for indoor and outdoor use. The individually adjustable arms are made of shiny aluminum, while the shade is made of thermoplastic material. The technopolymer of the luminaire head is manufactured using rotational molding. The concrete base ensures stability – a model with a floor mounting plate is also available.

Designer: Michele De Lucchi

Born in Ferrara in 1951, Michele De Lucchi moved to Florence in the 1970s, where he studied architecture – and proclaimed the design revolution. Inspired by the colors and shapes of pop culture, he founded the „Cavart“ group during his architectural studies, which created „radical design“. From 1978-80, he developed projects with the Alchimia group and, together with Ettore Sottsass and Barbara Radice, founded the Memphis design movement, which broke with the rules of functionalism.

In the 1980s, as an industrial designer, he developed pioneering products for companies such as Artemide, Vitra, Philips, Siemens and Olivetti, which he accompanied for 10 years as Director of Design. With his architecture firm, he has realized ambitious projects in many European countries – including for Deutsche Bank and Telecom Italia. A particular focus of his work is on cultural projects such as the Triennale Design Museum in Milan, the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome and the Neues Museum Berlin. Recently, Michele De Lucchi and his team have developed numerous architectural projects in Georgia, such as the country’s Ministry of the Interior or the Peace Bridge in Tbilisi.
