Vitra is showing four scenes during this year’s Salone del Mobile. Equipped with new products by Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Antonio Citterio, Konstantin Grcic and Hella Jongerius, they provide insights into four different lifestyles.

Vitra Eames Plastic Chairs & Eames Fiberglass ChairsTheChair of a Century

In 2019, Vitra is introducing a new color palette for the Eames shell chairs, combining two product lines that have long belonged together: the Eames Plastic Chairs and the Eames Fiberglass Chairs. Extensive research and analysis processes have resulted in a harmonious palette that emphasizes the connection between the two product groups. The result is a comprehensive collection of colors that emphasize the characteristics of the materials. With the relaunch of the Fiberglass Chairs and the continuation of production of the Plastic Chairs, Vitra now offers more than 100,000 possible combinations.

Vitra Eames Plastic Chairs & Eames Fiberglass Chairs – new colors

Charles & Ray Eames, 1950

In collaboration with the Eames family, represented by the Eames Office in Los Angeles, California, Vitra has revised the color palette of the seat shells of the Eames Plastic Chairs as part of extensive research. The new, carefully developed seat shell colors are designed to show off the material to its best advantage in a wide variety of environments. Groups of neutral, medium and bright colors form the palette of 14 contemporary colors for the Eames Plastic Chairs. In addition, the color selection for the Fiberglass Chairs has been expanded to include the three new colors Dark Ochre, Light Ochre and Red.

Eames Fiberglass Armchairs

Charles & Ray Eames, 1950 After a long interruption, Vitra has been producing the legendary chairs by Charles and Ray Eames in the original material fiberglass again since 2018. It started with the Side Chairs, now followed by the Armchairs with their iconic armrest shells.

Eames Plastic Chairs – LAR

Charles & Ray Eames, 1950 With its compact dimensions, the new Plastic Chair LAR is also suitable for use in smaller rooms and, thanks to its choice of colors for the seat shell, upholstery and base, it can be integrated into a wide variety of ambient styles. The steel wire base frame achieves maximum strength with a minimum of material and was soon given the charming nickname „Cat’s Cradle“ because of its shape.

Vitra Grand Relax

Antonio Citterio, 2019 Grand Relax is a luxurious recliner that combines maximum comfort with compact dimensions and a classically restrained design language. When sitting down, the user sinks into soft cushions and is guided into a resting position by an adjustable and lockable synchronized mechanism that is concealed in the armchair. The back section is edged on the outside with embossed split leather and forms a kind of shield that defines the contours of the chair and embraces the user. This gives Grand Relax a compact and inviting appearance.

Vitra Vlinder Sofa

Hella Jongerius, 2018 Vlinder combines the archetypal shape of a comfortable sofa with a fabric cover designed precisely for its shape. The upholstery fabric bears Jongerius‘ unmistakable signature and sets new standards in modern weaving technology: eight colors with yarns in two different thicknesses form the different layers for seven different jacquard weaves.

Vitra Bovist – Update

Hella Jongerius, 2019 Bovist is a decorative floor cushion, stool and ottoman in one. The cover consists of an expressive fabric pattern in an elaborate jacquard weaving technique. This pattern and its color scheme are based on the multi-layered design of the Vlinder sofa.

Charles & Ray Eames, 1964 The Eames Segmented Table Dining is characterized by an interplay of dimensions, materials and colors that turn the legendary classic into a homely and elegant dining table. With its round or boat-shaped table tops in various sizes, it is an invitation to free and informal seating arrangements in dining rooms of all shapes and sizes.

EMBRACING MODERN LIFE

The result of the latest collaboration between Fritz Hansen and Jaime Hayon, the JH97 lounge chair is the perfect balance between past and future. Combining classic craftsmanship techniques with modern innovation design, Fritz Hansen’s Lounge Chair JH97 is a contradiction in terms: classic yet modern, bold yet simple, light yet solid. „We wanted to create a modern lounge chair that was light and sculptural in its expression; combining Fritz Hansen’s know-how with Jaime Hayon’s sculptural design language,“ explains Christian Andresen, Head of Design at Fritz Hansen. The apotheosis of a lounge chair, the new iteration draws inspiration from nature: Inspired by the pelican, which is shaped for flight with long, broad wings, a gently curved body and a distinctive bill, the JH97 lounge chair conveys a similar lightness that their strength. Perfectly proportioned with a solid oak frame and available in natural or stained oak and black ash, the open, low silhouette has a contemporary feel despite its classic origins. Elegant from all angles, the decorative joints with gently rounded edges are assembled by hand in keeping with Danish design and craftsmanship traditions. Generous armrests – wide and flat – embrace and support the body, as does the curved backrest, which is angled in an upright position to ensure comfort even when sitting for long periods. To contribute to a relaxed sitting experience, the cushions are generously sized and upholstered with removable textile or leather covers so that you can easily change their appearance.

Shelving: Planer™ Shelving

Design: Paul McCobb, 1953 Our new shelving series is the latest addition to Fritz Hansen’s Planter collection and forever embodies modern design with multifunctional appeal. Designed in the 1950s by the late Paul McCobb, the – Planner™ shelf is a series of units that can display and store objects. „Planner™ shelving balances the graphic expression of Paul McCobb with the classic craftsmanship of Fritz Hansen,“ says Christian Andresen, Head of Design at Fritz Hansen, of the new addition. „It’s elegant in its simplicity, but it’s unashamedly attention-grabbing in a room.“ The Bauhaus-inspired lines of each unit are crafted from durable powder-coated steel with a matte finish, and the joints are hand-welded and gently rounded to soften the overall expression. Diagonal bars on the two larger designs lend additional support and create visual interest on the negative space that follows. The shelves are cut from natural oak and beveled at the edges to fit seamlessly into the frame – one of many small but significant details. Named for its ability to help shape the design of a room, the simple but striking shelf is available in three versions, each in different heights and configurations. ELEGANT ILLUMINATION PLANNER™ PM02 TABLE LAMP

Fritz Hansen’s newest member of the Planner™ family is a lamp that may be simple and small, but makes a big impression. Our Planner™ series, consisting of reissued 1950s designs by the late American designer Paul McCobb, gains a new member this season: the Planner™ PM02 table lamp. The thoughtful, practical design proves how beautiful simplicity can be, emitting indirect light from its hand-blown frosted glass shade to create a warm, atmospheric glow. Restrained in its expression, the luminaire stands on a three-legged base made of shiny brass or matt powder-coated steel, creating an elegant contrast to the tall, cylindrical Shade.

Where exactly is the boundary between working and living today? Last year, USM and UNStudio sought and found an answer to this question. To our surprise, we discovered that very few people want to stick to the separation between living and working areas. We enjoy our work more when we can decide freely and independently where we pursue our professional activities. This creates a third living space between these two areas, which we use together with people we don’t know: Co-working spaces, cafés, hotel lobbies and libraries.

Milano + sofa system

As a well thought-out addition to the existing Mobimex collection, Iria Degen designed a playful yet straightforward sculpture as the base for the new AVA table, which can be flexibly adapted to any tabletop shape. With AVA, Zoom by Mobimex presents a new solid wood table collection. The eye-catching surface structure of the base frame, which is available in various finishes, creates a harmonious dialog with the texture of the table top. The sculptural table can be freely positioned and combined in different ways, and the high-quality material and precise workmanship guarantee a stylish highlight, both at home and in a more technical office environment technical office environment. Mobimex stands for top quality, sustainability, simple shapes and understatement. The AVA table, created by the Zurich designer, embodies these values with its timeless touch, the freedom of form of the table tops and the high-quality variety of materials. At the same time, Mobimex is adding an emotional dimension to its range. The materials used are at the forefront: high-quality, embossed and polished sheet metal made from various copper alloys create an elegant contrast to the solid wood top. The surface treatment of these sheets is closely based on the natural oxidation and patination processes. USM has created such a third space at this year’s Salone del Mobile and we have invited our visitors to design the space with us. Where exactly is the boundary between working and living today? Last year, USM and UNStudio sought an answer to this question. Instead of a boundary, we found a third living space that opens up in between: Co-working spaces, cafés, hotel lobbies and libraries that we use to work together with people we don’t know. The conditions for human development must also be in place in this third space. What exactly are these conditions? The four areas we have identified relate to growing, learning, reflecting and being together. With Making Places, we want to show how these conditions can be created with the USM Modular Furniture Haller by simply adding a few extras. Making Places is a collective process in which visitors are invited to help shape the stand with stickers. In this way, the classic geometric shapes of the system are viewed from a playful perspective and USM is given a new visual identity. This process releases additional energy and, with a bit of luck, beyond the stand, which can be used to create further locations.

LaPalma and the world of the outdoors

At the Salone del Mobile, LaPalma presented a new collection that revolves around the world of the outdoors. „We have always worked with materials such as stainless steel and aluminum, which have already been used to create our furnishings. Outdoor is therefore a natural conceptual turning point. Today, we spend more time outdoors than indoors and our experience in working with materials has inevitably led us to listen to the needs of this world. We have taken up the outdoor challenge with the aim of developing products that guarantee the same performance as our indoor furniture,“ explains Romano Marcato, founder and owner of Lapalma together with his brother Dario. Before any idea, gesture or design, Lapalma loves to remember the deep respect for nature. And not only because nature and its amazing radiance of shapes, materials and colors have been the great representatives of the Lapalma style but also because the company has favored the awareness of virtuous, eco-friendly and sustainable processes. Fully recyclable materials, self-sufficient energy sources and photovoltaic panels meet all production requirements. The outdoor collection has evolved by expressing an idea that has given new shape to the work and home environment and large walk-through spaces. Two fundamental principles, maximum linearity and maximum lightness, ensure real moments of relaxation, well-being and encounters in the midst of nature and near water. Like nature in the forest, the outdoor world of Lapalma has taken root, and it is lush and very fresh. It starts with the PANCO table, while SEELA and ARIA chairs, JEY and YO small tables and KIPU bags thrive everywhere. It already feels like wandering in a garden of wonders.

Outdoor chair: IDA

Anderssen & Voll| 2019 It seemed impossible that a tubular aluminum construction could become a silk ribbon and create such a sinuous and daring curve. It seemed impossible until Lapalma, thanks to 30 years of research into materials, produced the new outdoor chair IDA, the new outdoor chair from Anderssen & Voll. Almost a reinterpretation of the classic café chair, it surprises with its metal frame combined with the comfort of a 3D mesh that embraces nature. An invitation to break away from strict modernity.

PANCO

Romano Marcato| 2019 It was created as a new addition to the PANCO collection, enhancing the intensity of a simple, unmistakable style, even amidst the freshness of nature. In the outdoor version, the table reintroduces the combination of steel and wood, with black and white lacquered metal legs and a resistant iroko table with a warm appeal. The convivial atmosphere is enhanced by the bench, which is made from the same materials. Robust and comfortable, it disappears elegantly under the table, enhancing the overall harmonious effect.

WITTMANN: What did we show in Milan

What we showed on these eventful days is also breezy, but well grounded: The gentle swing of Vuelta was to be found in Milano-finalmente! -on four chair legs for the first time. Jaime Hayon and Wittmann bring the most sought-after shape of recent years to the dining table. And since Hayon is never short of productivity and inventiveness, the right dining table is also included. Along with some other colorful new additions to the Wittmann Hayon Workshop collection. Why not-life can take on a little color. The new models by Jaime Hayon and Sebastian Herkner are dressed in velvet and linen. Wood, brass and marble were added to the mix. The fact that a complete Fine Dining Room is now available for Vuelta fans was a notable highlight. After all, it’s finally here – the Vuelta Dining Chair. And with it comes a matching table. Speaking of tables – the little ones among the new additions also deserve a lot of attention. The Helice Table and Sticks Table are delicate and subtle, but manage effortlessly to be both decorative and sophisticated objects. More about all the new products that Wittmann showed in Milan here.
