This year, we are delighted to celebrate the 90th anniversary of a true masterpiece of furniture design: the Zig Zag chair by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld. As one of the first free-swinging wooden chairs, it was introduced in 1934 and quickly established itself as an icon. The history of the Zig Zag chair
The Zig Zag chair, designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, is an impressive example of creative ingenuity and craftsmanship. Consisting of four levels arranged in a rhythmic sequence, it exudes an apparent instability that is reflected in extreme elegance. This design breaks with the traditional sequence of legs, seat and backrest and instead forms a continuous sheet of wood in the shape of an inverted Z.
The unique aesthetics of the Zig Zag chair are particularly evident in the colored version with an open-pore lacquer finish. This treatment emphasizes the wood grain and highlights the relationship between the vertical, oblique and horizontal lines – a tribute to Rietveld’s unconventional style.
