An invitation from the Orient

Inspired by the Orient, this designer side table by Patricia Urquiola is a domestic construct that emphasizes the layering of different materials.

The frame made of longitudinal and transverse beams with an oval cross-section, on which the table top rests, makes this designer piece ideal for the modern living room and is inspired by the custom of building and rebuilding Japanese shrines. The result is an elegant piece of furniture that is reminiscent of faraway lands.

CASSINA: Tramonto a New York

Design Gaetano Pesce
Indoor seating landscape

An icon of 20th century design, a symbol of the vitality, innovation and creativity of Italian design and one of its masters, Gaetano Pesce, is reissued in a limited series, while retaining the expressive value and relevance of the original design.
In the three-seater sofa, the upholstered skyscrapers are covered in an exclusive fabric with an embossed weave that alternates light and dark, recreating the effect of light reflecting off the windows. In contrast, the sun, wrapped in a bright red satin, disappears in the middle between the buildings of the backrest.
The Tramonto a New York design sofa is reproduced in a limited series of 50 pieces made from sustainable materials developed thanks to the work of Cassina LAB, in a size 20% larger than the archive model.

A kaleidoscope of colors

The light shines on the city as the sun sets in New York. A kaleidoscope of colors penetrates the windows of the skyscrapers and illuminates the new design screen by Gaetano Pesce.

The artist recreates the outlines of the city that never sleeps by pouring colored resin into molds in several stages to reproduce, layer by layer, the evocative shades of the building facades. This complex artisanal process means that no two pieces are the same.

The uniqueness of each piece is guaranteed by a plaque with the year of the project, the consecutive production number, the Cassina logo and the signature of the artist Gaetano Pesce.

Revolution in denim

The designer armchair with soft and generous lines, designed in the 1960s by Afra and Tobia Scarpa to bring informal comfort into the home, is now dressed in fine Japanese denim, in a limited edition that emphasizes its unconventional character.
The denim is crafted to be soft and comfortable. A special treatment gives it a gradient effect typical of worn jeans. The metal frame surrounds the armchair like a clamp and creates different and modern color combinations.
The denim version of the Soriana follows the same sustainable approach as its model and is offered with circular materials for both the structure and the upholstery. The denim fabric is also processed in a conscious way by limiting water consumption.

CASSINA HOCKER: Soft Corners

Designer: Linde Freya Tangelder

In the work of the Destroyers/Builders studio, the interaction between the pieces of furniture is expressed in an overarching inspiration that is reflected in architectural elements, materials or construction techniques. Studio founder Linde Freya Tangelder strives for sensory relevance and cultural value in the details and on a larger scale. The works are characterized by their sculptural and architectural character and the balance that exists between modern and traditional elements. The furniture pieces are inspired by architectural forms and highlight the tension between industry and nature through the use of different materials. Constructions are scaled down to human size and transformations create sculptural gestures. Both low and high end materials are reassessed, rethought and transformed. The handcrafted finishes and surfaces lend a tactile aspect to these architectural objects. The contrast of the materials, the proximity and the human traces are still visible in the object and reveal the working method of Destroyers/Builders. The need to place the works in a spatial context, in which the specific architectural space enters into a dialog with the objects within it, is central to the studio’s work. Complements and relationships between the context and the work, whether it is a sculpture, a piece of furniture or an architectural fragment, lead to an inseparable connection between the disciplines. Destroyers/Builders realizes both commissioned and self-directed projects in the fields of architecture, furniture design and interior design. The studio was founded in 2014 and is based in Antwerp.

Made of stainless steel in antiqued and burnished or lacquered steel versions.
A playful interweaving of volumes

Dutch designer Linde Freya Tangelder’s first project for Cassina focuses on functionality through the fresh and dynamic composition of upholstered volumes that can be used as versatile interior design elements.

Soft blocks that interlock as if in an embrace give shape to three types of design furniture accessories. Rectangular, low rectangular and square „L“ shaped, each has a structural core of wood on which soft padded rubbers are placed.
In contrast to the soft, upholstered shapes of the designer poufs, the collection is completed by an industrial-style stainless steel side table made up of three pieces welded together.

LONGPLANE: EXTENDABLE DINING TABLE BY CASSINA

A new project by Rodolfo Dordoni enriches the Cassina collection for dining area furnishings: the Longplane extendable table. It is characterized by a graphic design and a marked aesthetic balance, composed of clean lines and rigorous proportions. Its elongated shape incorporates elements of Cassina’s high level of craftsmanship, which can be seen in the connection between the legs and the solid horizontal beam. The solid wood frame, available in Canaletto walnut and natural oak, stained black or amaranth, lightly supports the wide and slender table top. Longplane brings a touch of sophistication to the interior of the home and leaves room for different interpretations of use. Available in three different sizes, the top of the fixed version can be combined with wooden legs to obtain a product in a single material, or it is offered in a rich choice of marble or in the most refined metal, characterized by a striped effect. In the extendable version with wooden or metal top, it has extensions adapted to the surface of the wooden structure; a true combination of elegance, flexibility and functionality.

Flutz – armchair from CASSINA

Design Michael Anastassiades

The inspiration: the precise, impeccable and elegant gestures of figure skating. The shape, an oxymoron of materials and thicknesses. Flutz is the perfectly resolved combination of a rigid and geometric frame with a soft and inviting seat.

The project, designed by Michael Anastassiades for Cassina, sees the chair’s armrests consisting of two thin, parallel aluminum plates connected by crossbars and supported by an invisible plate whose function is to give stability to the base and support the seat, which appears to float. The seat with removable leather or fabric cover guarantees stable and comfortable seating with its seat shell with soft padding in a lining of recycled PET wadding.

Thanks to the work Cassina LAB has done on the circular economy, the parts of the chair can be dismantled and recycled at the end of the furniture’s life. This includes the upholstery, which can be separated from the lining with a zipper inside, and the metal frame with a matt finish, which is available in three vibrant colors: powder-coated aluminium in anthracite or black or anodized natural.
Flutz is not only comfortable and elegant, but also goes perfectly with the Ordinal table, which was also designed by the Cypriot designer and completes his furnishing proposals for the dining area.

CASSINA: Mexique Stool Outdoor

Designer: Charlotte Perriand

Charlotte Perriand was part of the avant-garde cultural movement that, from the first decades of the twentieth century, led to a profound change in aesthetic values and gave rise to a truly modern sensibility towards everyday life. In this context, its specific contribution focuses on interior design as the creation of a new way of life that is still at the heart of contemporary lifestyles today. In the history of 20th century interior design, the advent of modernity made possible the entrepreneurial boldness of this true reformer of interior design. At the beginning of her professional career, she was celebrated by critics for her Bar Sous le Toit (Bar Under the Roof), constructed entirely of nickel-plated copper and anodized aluminium, which was presented at the Salon d’Automne exhibition in 1927. In the same year, aged just 24, she began a decade-long collaboration with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret in the famous design studio at 25 rue de Sèvres in Paris. Her presence in Le Corbusier’s studio is evident in all the furniture designed with him and Pierre Jeanneret: Charlotte Perriand became a cornerstone of the architect’s reformation project, adding a distinct trace of humanity to Le Corbusier’s often cool rationalism. In her designs, she succeeded in filling the basic substance of everyday life with new aesthetic values: In particular, her talent and flair for discovering and using new materials are fully expressed. The ten-year collaboration with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret and her experiences in Japan represent periods of intense creative drive in the artist’s life. During her long stay in the Far East (1940-46), she fully exploited her artistic talent by reinterpreting the reality of life to reflect both tradition and modernity. Particularly noteworthy are, for example, the furniture made using traditional bamboo processing techniques, which bring out the new forms already tested with steel tubes. After her return to Paris, she concentrated on a series of original and balanced productions commissioned by high authorities and leading companies such as Air France, as well as numerous foreign organizations. In the meantime, she had made a name for herself on the international scene. Charlotte Perriand’s personality is characterized above all by a great loyalty to the principles of human and innovative rationalism, which is always present in her projects. She worked on them with great passion, also with a view to their „revival“ in the „Cassina I Maestri“ collection.

Skyscraper

Design Bodil Kjaer
Architecture made of glass
In this new edition of the vase designed by Bodil Kjær in the early sixties, architecture is the protagonist. The transparency emphasizes the complex geometry of the object, which is reminiscent of a skyscraper.
Its statuesque form is achieved by a particularly elaborate processing of the glass in the name of craftsmanship excellence.
Skyscraper is made of transparent glass that is mechanically pressed into a cast-iron mold to reproduce the shape of a building and the precious architectural details – an extremely complex process given the great thickness of the glass.

Designer: Bodil Kjaer

Bodil Kjær, professor, architect and member of the MAA (Member of the Association of Academic Architects in Denmark), was born in Denmark in 1932. She studied in Denmark, England and the USA and worked as an architect, designer and urban planner in her design studios in Copenhagen and London.
Between 1955 and 1963, when she was involved in planning public interiors, she designed a series of „architectural elements“ aimed at solving functional and aesthetic problems. These furnishings, lighting solutions and glassware, initially designed without commercial intent, went into production and distribution in the USA and Europe after being discovered by other architects and used for their buildings. Some of these objects are still available, mainly at auction, and the Office Desk, now manufactured by Karakter, can also be seen in the first James Bond films and in more recent English films and television series.
After returning to Denmark, Bodil Kjær now lives on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula, where she continues her teaching and research and is involved in the urban planning of the city of Aarhus.
CASSINA VASEN: Sestiere

Design Patricia Urquiola

The complicity of glass

A contemporary vase collection that preserves and interprets the Venetian heritage par excellence. Sestiere preserves the traditional craftsmanship of glass and reinterprets it with creativity in a lively homage to Venice.

The vase is designed like a mouth-blown glass bubble, almost stretched open by a network of cords. Each cord, called a „morisa“ in the Murano tradition, is attached by hand to the outside of the vase, creating a pleasing imperfect effect. The „morise“ are decorated with the „Rigadin“ stripe pattern typical of the lagoon.

Vase and cord, two very different languages of glass, coexist harmoniously and create an unprecedented complicity between form, function and workmanship. This makes each vase unique, an expression of visible and tangible craftsmanship.

Design Formafantasma
The contemporary expression of decoration, black on white

Formafantasma designs become decorations on porcelain thanks to the know-how, skill and experience of Ginori 1735’s master painters. They work naturally and leave their mark through instinctive movements, abstract signs that update the concept of decoration.

The collection consists of a series of vases with different shapes, contemporary objects that can stand alone or be joined together to form graphic compositions. La particolarità della lavorazione consiste nella decorazione „a graffito“ sulla porcellana bisquit ottenuta con una cottura diretta: il graffito viene disegnato sulla superficie con un pigmento nero e successivamente fissato.

The motifs are made entirely by hand with special ceramic chalks. Each object is unique in every respect, both in terms of the nature of the porcelain and the emotional craftsmanship with which it is made. Each piece is numbered by the master who decorated it and bears the Cassina and Ginori 1735 logos.
