Colours speak. They evoke emotions, create atmosphere and make rooms radiant – or calm them down. But which colours really harmonise with each other? And how can you skilfully combine different shades without your living room looking like a colour carousel?

In our new Design Squad article for
Bruno Wickart, we guide you through the world of colour concepts – well-founded, inspiring and without any colour panic.
🖌️ 1. Colour concepts with a system – your basis for design with depth
🤍 White – the stage for everything
White is the all-rounder among colours. It creates calm, space and balance. Whether combined with strong moss green or fresh aqua blue – white makes every tone shine and gently softens wild patterns. Especially in modern homes with lots of light, white never looks empty, but airy.
💡
Tip from Mia (colour): Use white in a targeted way to stylishly frame strong colour accents such as petrol or curry.
⚫ Neutral, but never boring: grey, beige & black

These tones are the backbone of any modern interior – understated, elegant, timeless. Grey + beige = “greige” – the interior favourite of recent years. Combined with wood and soft textiles, it looks warm and elegant.
🪞
Alex (Material) recommends: Combine matt, muted colours with natural surfaces such as oak or walnut – this adds depth and texture.
🔴 Use power colours cleverly: Red, yellow, orange
These colours are like espresso: great in small doses, too much of them and you’ll go crazy. Use them for vibrant accents, for example in the kitchen or hallway. If you have the courage, go for colour blocking: pink + orange = statement!
🧠
Design Squad rule of thumb: always balance bold colours with calm basics.
💜 Purple, lilac, wine red – the sensual mixed colours

These tones change depending on the light – sometimes romantic, sometimes dramatic. They have a particularly intense effect in the bedroom or reading area. Combined with cool grey or matt gold, they create a sophisticated, almost mystical atmosphere.
🕯️
Lena (light) loves: indirect light in combination with lilac – a look like an evening in Paris.
🎨 2. understanding colour theory – the compass of your design
🔺 Primary colours: red, yellow, blue
They are the basis of every colour tone. Working with these colours immediately creates dynamism. Ideal for modern, minimalist rooms where you want to create a big impact with just a few elements.
🔄 Complementary colours: Opposites that attract
Blue & orange, red & green, yellow & violet – opposite each other on the colour wheel, ingeniously next to each other in the room. The trick: one colour dominates, the other accentuates.
📌
Noah (architecture) recommends: Use complementary contrasts in large, open spaces – that’s where they really come into their own.
🏡 3. colours in the room – which tone for which purpose?

🖼️ 4. Colours in the office: small accents, big effect
Not everyone wants to paint the wall straight away. That’s why there are
subtle colour accents:
- Cushions & plaids in seasonal colours
- Vases, candle holders or trays as a splash of colour
- Wall murals with a colour gradient or geometry
- Chairs in a contrasting colour to the table
- Rugs as a connecting element
✨ Conclusion: Colours need courage – and balance
