Dining chairs are part of the basic furnishings in every home.

Especially in
the dining area, the social heart of the home, they play a central role – not only visually, but also ergonomically. After all, who wouldn’t want to sit comfortably with family and friends for hours on end?
But what do you need to look out for to ensure that your new chair not only looks good, but also fits perfectly with your dining table?
🔍 Why is the seat height of a dining chair so important?

The
seat height is crucial for comfort when sitting down and standing up. It must match the
table height and
body height. The rule of thumb is
🧮 Table height – seat height = 27 to 32 cm
This distance ensures that you can sit comfortably and move around easily – without bumping into the tabletop.
Tip: If your table has a table frame (crossbar under the tabletop), take it into account when calculating the legroom.
📐 How do I find the optimum seat height?
-
chairs: white, maple base table: natural oak, basic dark
Your thighs should be horizontal and your feet flat on the floor.
- Your elbows should be able to rest on the table at a right angle with an upright posture.
Usual seat heights are between
40-50 cm. A height of
45 cm has established itself as the standard, but does not work equally well for every body size.
🪑 Chairs with and without armrests: What should be considered?
- Chairs without armrests are flexible and can usually be easily pushed under the table.
- Chairs with armrests offer additional comfort, but require more space.
💡
Tip on armrest height: Allow at least
2 cm between the
armrest and the
lower edge of the table top or frame so that the chairs can be pushed under the table if necessary.
📏 Seat depth – how much space do I need?

The
seat depth influences how comfortably you sit on a chair – especially on longer evenings:
- Ideally, there should be approx. 3-7 cm of air between the back of your knees and the front edge of the seat when sitting.
- Your legs should rest loosely on the floor at a 90-degree angle.
🪑 How many dining chairs fit at my table?

An often underestimated point:
space per seat. So that nobody feels cramped:
➤ Tarpaulin
at least 60-70 cm wide per chair
With
swivelling dining chairs, additional free space is important so that the chairs don’t get in each other’s way.
Chairs with armrests are ideal for the
head of the table – they look particularly inviting and cosy there.
📏 How much space should there be around the dining table?

To be able to stand up comfortably and move around freely:
➤ Plan
at least 80-90 cm distance between chair and wall or nearest piece of furniture
This way you avoid unpleasant bumping – and everyone can push the chair forwards or backwards in a relaxed manner.
🛒 Conclusion: Finding the right dining chair
When buying
dining chairs, it’s not just about the design, but also about the perfect combination of
seat height, armrest height, seat depth and the
space available around your table. If you pay attention to these points, you can create a stylish and comfortable dining area that invites you to linger.
