When Charles Eames asked in 1956: “Why don’t we make a contemporary version of the old English club chair?”, the story of one of the most famous furniture designs in design history began. Since then, the Eames Lounge Chair & Ottoman has stood for modern comfort, perfect craftsmanship and design with soul. Description of all six wooden shell versions of the Eames Lounge Chair & Ottoman, based on the official Vitra Factbook:
1. the Lounge Chair Chestnut, clear lacquered
European chestnut wood is characterised by its large annual rings and an open-pored, lively grain. These characteristics give the material a warm, inviting appearance. In the clear lacquered version, the wood initially appears honey-coloured with a natural sheen. Over time, it develops a noble patina through exposure to light and darkens to an elegant golden-reddish-brown – an organic change that allows the piece of furniture to age and mature with its surroundings.
2. the natural walnut lounge chair (European black walnut)
This version uses European black walnut, which differs from American walnut in its lighter, partly grey-tinted colouring. Its calm grain and even colour gradient radiate natural elegance and understatement. The wood has a restrained and balanced effect – ideal for interiors that emphasise understated noblesse and timeless aesthetics.
3. the dark walnut lounge chair
The dark-stained European walnut is a stylish choice for lovers of restrained, dark tones. In contrast to rosewood, which has a strong character, this variant appears calmer and softer, but no less elegant. The even, finely structured grain gives the wood depth without pushing itself too much into the foreground – a subtle interpretation of dark elegance.
4 The European cherry lounge chair
Cherry wood from Europe offers a fine, dense structure with a particularly even grain. The natural colour ranges from golden yellow to reddish, with the wood turning a deep, warm reddish brown over time. This gentle colour development combined with the smooth texture makes cherry a particularly harmonious and homely choice – perfect for both classic and modern interiors.
5. the Santos rosewood lounge chair
This exotic wood with its intense, contrasting grain was an integral part of Charles and Ray Eames’ original design from the very beginning. Santos rosewood is sourced from certified FSC forests in Bolivia and brings a strong, almost dramatic expressiveness into play. The deep brown and purple tones and lively texture make it the “classic” lounge chair variant – for all those who want to visualise character and design history.
6. the chestnut black lacquered lounge chair
Despite the dark lacquer finish, the characteristic, warm texture of the chestnut wood remains tangible. The black surface has a modern, graphic and understated look – ideal for combinations with black bases or dark leather and fabric upholstery. This version is particularly suitable for minimalist rooms in which contrasts are deliberately emphasised.
