The Eames Wire Chair brings lightness to rooms with high standards: a transparent classic by Charles & Ray Eames – versatile, full of character and surprisingly comfortable.

Living with feeling – wire meets design
Sometimes all it takes is one look to realise: This is more than just a chair. The
Eames Wire Chair not only embodies an iconic design idea – it is an expression of architectural clarity and functional elegance. Its filigree transparency, combined with precision craftsmanship, makes it an object that lets rooms breathe.
Architecture in miniature – the wire mesh as a statement
Charles & Ray Eames developed the Wire Chair in 1951 as a further development of their organic seat shells. The special feature: the seat shell made of welded steel wire. With a refined orthogonal structure and clear lines, it brings a technical sophistication to the living and contract areas without losing any of its warmth. The construction made from a single material has a holistic, modern – and iconically timeless – effect.
One chair, many faces – models, upholstery, places of use
Whether DKR, DKX, DKW or DKL – the Wire Chair is available in numerous bases and versions:
- DKR: Rod base – classic with struts
- DKX: X-base made of tubular steel
- DKW: Warm with wooden base made of maple
- DKL: With La Fonda aluminium frame
All versions are available with or without upholstery – as a
simple seat cushion or with the characteristic
“Bikini” upholstery, optionally in fabric or leather. There is a special
Bikini Outdoor version for outdoor use, which is weatherproof, removable and easy to clean.
Seating comfort meets outdoor function – now with the new “Bikini Outdoor”
The seat shell of the Wire Chair is both flexible and supportive. Precisely fitting cushions – fixed or interchangeable – create real comfort. Particularly ingenious: the
Soft Seats, loose seat cushions for even more softness, available in many colours and materials – also as an
outdoor version with a non-slip underside and water-repellent surface.
Vitra has now developed a new version for even more comfort outdoors: the
Bikini Outdoor. This consists of a weatherproof cover with matching upholstery and is attached to the wire frame using a
clip system – quickly removable, easily washable and replaceable if necessary. This means that all powder-coated Wire Chairs (with the exception of the DKW with wooden legs) can
also be used outdoors with full seating comfort.
The classic indoor upholstery – full-surface, optionally in leather or fabric, in a wide range of colours – will of course remain in the range. Whether indoors, outdoors or both: there is a suitable Wire Chair for every area of use.
At home anywhere – from the dining table to the design hotel
With its robust steel structure, clear silhouette and variety of colours, the Wire Chair fits into many environments:
- As a dining chair at a modern dining table
- In public spaces such as lounges or reception areas
- In restaurants, cafés or canteens
- For conference and meeting rooms – thanks to its elegant presence
- Even outdoors, with a powder-coated frame and outdoor upholstery
Durable & responsible – the Vitra way
Vitra uses recycled steel and aluminium, vegetable-tanned leather and easy-care textiles. Every product is repairable, reusable and part of a comprehensive take-back programme. Because sustainable design doesn’t start with recycling – it starts with the right design.
Materials & colours – for every aesthetic
The Wire Chair is available in the following finishes:
- Chrome-plated, powder-coated in basic dark, white, citron, sea foam green and many more.
- Upholstery fabrics: Hopsak (35 colours), leather (30 colours), Bikini Outdoor
- Solid wood frame (DKW): maple in yellowish, dark or black
Conclusion: An icon with lightness
