Our sofa from Hay: for cozy evenings at home

The early interior design planning phase

At the moment, we have a number of topics on our agenda, as all the inputs relevant to the shell construction have to be made in the next few days. We have finally been able to finalize the kitchen planning, we have agreed on how the bathrooms will be designed and we have already been able to define the number of sockets and light connections for the electrical planning. In principle, the latter would be the simplest exercise. However, it is important to note that we should ideally already know where to place which furniture for the lighting connections so that we don’t have to run unnecessary cables along the ceiling. After all, we want to have as few visible cables as possible.

What comes with us and what we need to buy new

Practical-and-stylish sideboard

It hasn’t been that long since our last „refurbishment“ of the interior design. We only bought a sofa, dining table and chairs and other items a good two years ago. In principle, we remain true to our Nordic minimalist style. We absolutely love our Hay sofa and the dining table from the same manufacturer. Naturally, they come with us. We’ve already been glad of them several times, even though the Kvadrat cover can take a beating. When we decided on the sofa, we also had the ALL model from Hay for the children’s room upholstered with the same Hallingdal 116 from Kvadrat. This gives us the flexibility to combine the two pieces of furniture. However, the lounge chair will probably find its place in the library room. If you have children, we recommend impregnating the sofa fabric at this point.

What will become of the bar in the new home

We also like to enjoy an evening with Netflix, but we no longer want the TV to have the same presence as it does at the moment. Even though we love our Ethnicraft sideboard more than anything, we’re thinking of selling it and just putting the TV on a tripod. On the whole, however, the dimensions of the living area will remain as they are today. This means that the positioning of the ceiling light can be determined almost to the centimeter. The same applies to the dining area. The biggest drawback in today’s living situation is that the pendant light is not centered in relation to the dining table. Since we are taking over the table, we can already plan the exact placement here too.

Even if it seems excessive to talk about the interior design at this stage of the construction process, we recommend that you think about it at an early stage so that you can enter the lighting design with the electrical planner as accurately as possible. It is relevant for the shell of the building and is therefore essential. Another advantage is that you may also be able to recess the canopy of your luminaire into the ceiling. And this is the best opportunity right here and now – without incurring unnecessary additional costs.

Artificial light sources are more than just an object

Our lamp for the kitchen island

You have already seen in previous articles that a high amount of daylight is extremely important to us. The same applies to artificial light sources. Lamps, especially for the entrance area and kitchen, are of central importance to us. They should be more than just a source of light, they should be part of our living concept. But we also realize that good (and above all beautiful) lamps come at a price and have a big impact on our budget. We are currently planning two Occhio Mito Volo pendant lights above the cooking island. For the entrance, there are „Clara“ lights from Flos. Three pieces, each 60 cm in diameter, should be just right for an entrance area/corridor around 7.5 meters long. However, they are worth it to us, but force us to make other compromises. For example, when we move in, we will still use lamps from our current home in certain rooms and/or opt for cheaper alternatives in the children’s rooms. We will provide you with more details and tips on the subject of „light“ in a future article.

The three question marks

We are missing a key factor for the interior design planning of the two children’s rooms and the master bedroom: the carpentry company for the production of the fitted wardrobes has not yet been determined. Even though we have set aside a budget for two fitted wardrobes and a dressing room, we don’t yet know what we can afford. The worst-case scenario would be if we were allowed to move our old wardrobes into both children’s rooms. That will be decided in the coming weeks. However, we agree that our double bed and the children’s bed will certainly remain in the new four walls. And everything else will work out somehow.
