Das Eigenheim-Projekt

The home ownership project: The dressing room – (not) a question of decadence

Where should all the clothes go? Even though we are always trying to clear out our wardrobe and get rid of clothes we have loved up to now, we still accumulate a few things to wear. So far, two two-meter wardrobes have been enough for us. And we don’t want much more in the future. The layout of the new apartment now allows us to plan a dressing room in the bedroom. And because we know dressing rooms primarily from Hollywood films, it was time to look for a more realistic solution. It should be functional and reduced to the bare essentials.

Ikea, really?

Let’s get straight to the point: Nothing speaks against Ikea in and of itself. But longevity is not necessarily attributed to certain product categories. And yet – in our research, we come across the Pax system again and again. Very often, in fact. This prompted us to pay the Swedish furniture store another long overdue visit. And lo and behold: on site, the Pax system certainly makes an impression: it can be combined and complemented well in terms of content. This has the particular advantage that you can react quickly and inexpensively to changing living circumstances and thus adapt the wardrobe contents.

Incidentally, we also had a quote prepared by our carpenter. The rejection was less due to the costs than to the flexibility that Ikea offers.

Small but nice

Das Eigenheim-Projekt

The sleeping area leads directly into the dressing room, which in turn is connected to the bathroom. We do without the wardrobe doors and leave the dressing room open. For the two of us, we have a wardrobe 225 cm long opposite each other with an aisle a good 110 cm wide. That’s all the space we have. All in all, the dressing room is around six square meters.

Like the bathroom, we illuminate the dressing room with a slightly cooler light of 4000 Kelvin, using spotlights on a track system. The idea is that we want to connect the bathroom and dressing room conceptually and thus separate them from the sleeping area. The lighting in the sleeping area is therefore kept in 2700 Kelvin like the rest of the rooms.

The missing design element

Das Eigenheim-Projekt

The disadvantage of this wardrobe solution is the unattractive and cheap-looking rear wall. It consists of a plain, brown, thin chipboard panel. Not something you really want to see when you get up. We have found a simple but ingenious solution for this. We clad the sleeping alcove, i.e. the wall behind the bed and the back wall of the wardrobes, with acoustic panels made of oak veneer. We looked at several manufacturers and chose TopAkustik, a local manufacturer from Lungern. The panels consist of 20 mm wide oak bars, separated by narrow joints. In our opinion, it not only looks cozy, but also ensures pleasant room acoustics.

Children’s room wardrobes – Ikea and yet somehow not

At around 13.5 square meters, the children’s rooms are not huge, but they are definitely not small either. The rooms were designed so that there is enough space for a wardrobe behind each door. Here, too, we initially planned built-in wardrobes, but then decided on the same solution as for our dressing room for the same reasons, but with doors. Various suppliers on the market now offer compatible elements for Ikea products. This is how we came across Reform CPH, which also produces wardrobe linings and doors for the PAX system, among other things. This means that we only source the interior from Ikea and the „shell“ from Reform CPH. This makes them a real eye-catcher.
