The home ownership project: preparations are in full swing

The preparations are in full swing

Our daughter’s baby toys still barely fit in the room

The last time we moved house was exactly ten years ago. Although we have helped with a private move here and there, we are still a little out of practice. But we also see the move as an opportunity for a fresh start and to finally get rid of the ballast that has piled up. It’s a liberating feeling, even if we know that some things will be bought again (which is even more fun).

We have regularly mucked out and got rid of superfluous things. This saves us a lot of time and nerves. A six-monthly clear-out is not only recommended for this reason. However, there are also some items that have found their way back into the cellar because they still have some memories and emotions attached to them. For the end of March, however, we have firmly resolved that even supposed „favorite pieces“ will find their way to the disposal station. We have already been able to sell most things such as sideboards, cupboards and certain accessories via classified ad platforms. Not always at the best price – but we are happy that we have been able to find buyers who will give our furniture a second home.

Drag or let drag?

Our cupboards are bursting at the seams

There are certain things that you simply don’t want to have to deal with on your own any longer. Moving is one of them. We therefore decided to hire a removal company. Reputable providers, as in our case, inspect the apartment beforehand and only then make an offer. However, as our budget for this is limited, we will take on certain tasks ourselves. On the one hand, we can save costs by doing the packing – another opportunity to say goodbye to certain unwanted items. As we live on the fourth floor, we will also move as many boxes as possible to the first floor early on, clear out the cellar and prepare furniture for transportation. We have also drawn up a moving plan that uses numbers and colors to make it easy to see at a glance where the items need to be put back in the new apartment. We hope this will save us a good two hours of work, which in turn amounts to around CHF 500. We also recommend agreeing a cost ceiling with the removal company so that there are no surprises at the end.

The more efficiently the move is carried out, the better. Because we have a full program that day. We collect the keys to the apartment in the morning and the first tradesmen arrive in the afternoon to install the window wall. But we don’t bring the children back to us until the evening – so it’s almost like being on vacation again 😉.
