Lilou’s room has been given a spring tree

To get straight to the point: After more than a year and a half, this is our last post in the home project series. In over 20 posts, we have tried to give you an understanding of the individual stages of the construction phase and tips on the subject of interior design.

We hope that you have gained some new insights. As amateurs, we have grown with the task. Over the last 18 months, we have dealt intensively with almost all aspects of building and furnishing. Now, a good two months after moving into the apartment, we look back with a sense of wistfulness, joy and also a little pride.

There were no big surprises

The good support from Schmid AG, the suppliers and ultimately our planning and preparations meant that there were no planning or construction errors. Apart from a few cosmetic corrections, we were able to take over the apartment as desired. We left nothing to chance and devoted ourselves meticulously and with attention to detail to the individual issues. Our tip to you: the more concrete your ideas are, the more likely it is that a „no, can’t be done“ will become a „yes, we can do it“. Ultimately, it is important that you can move into your own home according to your ideas and have to make as few compromises as necessary. Therefore, insist on your implementation wishes or alternative scenarios. Basically, anything can be realized if you are prepared to bear the costs and it is worth it to you.

During the last construction phase, for example, we insisted on inspecting the construction site in person on a regular basis. For two reasons: Firstly, it is easier to make corrections at this stage and being on site gives the workers the feeling that they know who they are working for. A quick chat, a few sandwiches and a crate of beer after work works wonders. The defects that we wouldn’t have seen until after we moved in, and which might have been impossible to rectify, were so easily remedied.

It’s the little details that bring joy

It’s hard to put a figure on how long we spent on the wall paint. It’s definitely several days, books, blogs and magazines. In the end, we decided on a white with seven percent black. Was it worth all the effort? Definitely. Even though it only created a small but noticeable contrast. But it’s all the little details that make up the overall picture. Our minimalist, almost monochromatic living style makes it easy: we focus on subtle, matt colors from white to black and natural oak. Stay true to your style and don’t get caught up in all the new possibilities that arise for you during the construction phase. And don’t get too many opinions from friends and acquaintances, because too many cooks spoil the broth.

Let your rooms take effect on you after you move in and then enrich them with additional accessories. Don’t underestimate the impact of room acoustics on your well-being: curtains, carpets and acoustic panels combine to create an excellent atmosphere. The same applies to light – provide balanced ambient lighting and supplement this with indirect light sources. Use bright, warm light sources that you can optionally dim. It is worth spending money on good lamps. It is often the things that are inconspicuous at first glance that help the furniture to stand out.

Either way, we wish you every success with your project.
