Kangourou armchair – NEW – LIMITED by VITRA

It goes without saying that a deckchair must be comfortable. Beyond comfort, the sculptural wooden side elements of the Kangourou armchair are among the most expressive elements in Jean Prouvé’s oeuvre – and yet they are more than just a formal exercise. Prouvé always adhered to the motto „form follows function“: the solid wooden construction supports the chair at the point where the sitter exerts the greatest strain. The front legs, on the other hand, are made of relatively thin steel tubes, as they do not have to bear the primary load. The same principle can also be seen in his better-known Standard Chair. The fact that Jean Prouvé called the chair „Kangourou“ reveals his sense of humor. With a little imagination, the silhouette profile of the chair can be understood to resemble a sitting kangaroo.

Vitra has reissued the Kangourou armchair in collaboration with Catherine Prouvé, Jean Prouvé’s daughter. The lounge chair combines a basic structure made of natural oak with metal legs in the striking color Prouvé Bleu Marcoule; the cushions are covered with a color-coordinated, softly woven bouclé fabric. Fauteuil Kangourou is limited to 150 pieces and is only available directly from Vitra.
