AM Chair: Developed by Vitra in Switzerland

Design: Alberto Meda, 2016

Alberto Meda is not only a designer, but above all an engineer. He looks for durable solutions that are born from an inner constructive logic. At Orgatec, Vitra and Alberto Meda are presenting an office chair that follows this understanding of design: The AM Chair is the result of engineering skill, design quality and experience. It combines ergonomic functionality with technical elegance.

„The AM Chair is light, both physically and visually, with a simple, uniform and almost ‚organic‘ appearance. Its structure adapts to the requirements of different users and offers a range of fine adjustments to increase comfort – without revealing the complex functions,“ says Alberto Meda, describing his design.

Dynamic armrests and a height-adjustable backrest give the AM Chair an emblematic identity, while the slim plastic frame and transparent mesh cover lend it lightness. At the same time, the AM Chair is consistently geared towards functional requirements and avoids anything superfluous in terms of design.

„The AM Chair is a solution that compensates for various constraints – such as performance and cost – because it integrates the relevant technological innovations of our time,“ explains Meda. The AM Chair is an economical tool for today’s office environment. Its synchronized mechanism responds to the user’s weight and provides maximum individual comfort without the need for pre-setting. Further fine adjustments are made using simple and intuitive functions. The height-adjustable backrest offers both stability and flexibility and its contour ensures ergonomically correct sitting. The profiled and comfortably upholstered seat offers a pleasant sitting experience from the moment you sit down.

With its wide range of individual adjustment options, the AM Chair is the ideal chair for long periods of sitting at a fixed workstation, but is also suitable for touch-down areas with frequently changing users thanks to its high initial comfort. Following the presentation of the AM Chair at Orgatec 2016, the chair is now available for end customers. ID Chair Concept : Developed by Vitra in Switzerland

Design: Antonio Citterio, 2010/2016

With the ID Chair Concept, countless individual chairs can be configured on a common basis. The FlowMotion synchronous mechanism with different function groups, different backrests, seats, armrests and bases, a wide range of colors for the covers and various accessories create freedom in putting together the right office chair – regardless of the area of application.

Self-determination in the office suits the modern knowledge worker and the chair is their most important piece of furniture. The ID Chair Concept allows companies to meet the needs of individual users and groups with „different“ ID Chairs – thus enabling individualization. At the same time, the ID Chair Concept gives the office environment and therefore the company an identity. This is because the ID Chair modular system can be used to put together chairs for teams or entire areas with a uniform aesthetic that matches the corporate identity and covers different requirements in terms of their functions.

At the heart of the system is a patented FlowMotion mechanism platform. Compact in design, it guides the back in a flowing movement sequence and allows forward and backward tilting with synchronized weight adjustment for the first time. The Institute of Biomechanics at ETH Zurich has subjected the ID Chair Concept and the FlowMotion mechanism to a scientific study, which led to the following results: Active prevention of health problems can be strengthened by dynamic sitting, with the forward tilt of the seat having a particularly positive effect. This activates muscles and moves all segments of the spine in the lower area.

This means blood flow to the muscles and diffusion to the intervertebral discs, which has a health-promoting effect. Six different backrests are available for the ID Chair. A frame construction covered with 3D mesh stands for technical transparency (ID Mesh); a backrest upholstered with foam cushions in two different heights for a classically neutral shape (ID Soft and ID Soft L); a sandwich construction, also in two heights, conveys a modern, handcrafted expression (ID Trim and ID Trim L) and an innovative, perforated plastic backrest ensures plenty of freedom of movement (ID Air). With functional elements such as lumbar supports, armrests, headrests and clothes hangers, the chair can be further adapted to personal requirements. The wide range of colors for the upholstery extends the dominant black of office chairs to include many options that reflect the transparency and homeliness of modern offices.

vitra further expanded the successful chair family in 2016: In addition to the standard seat, which offers plenty of freedom of movement, there is now a contoured seat as an alternative, which provides good lateral support and a high level of initial comfort thanks to its indentation. And the ID Soft version with the upholstered backrest has been supplemented with the high ID Soft L version.

The ID Chair Concept is also interesting from an economic perspective. It allows companies to meet the different seating needs of their employees without having to provide numerous chair types at the same time. Pacific Chair : Developed by Vitra in Switzerland

Design: Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby, 2016

The work of Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby is characterized by practicality and precision. As astute observers of users‘ needs in relation to everyday objects, their designs are simultaneously gentle in their gestures and always accessible and restrained. Their latest design also reflects this design philosophy: together with Vitra, the designers are presenting their first office chair, the Pacific Chair, at Orgatec 2016.

The development of the Pacific Chair followed the guiding principle of „full performance, quiet design“ and harmonizes these two characteristics. The individual components, made from high-quality materials, all follow a uniform design language and give the Pacific Chair clarity and precision. Its expression is characterized in particular by the backrest, which is extended so far downwards that no mechanical component is visible from behind apart from the base. This turns the chair into a graphic element that blends discreetly into contemporary architecture.

„To improve comfort, we worked with Vitra to develop a new mechanism that responds to the user’s individual weight. And the lumbar support is adjusted by moving the backrest up or down from a seated position,“ explains Jay Osgerby. Although not formally on show, the Pacific Chair has highly developed functions that are consistently geared towards ergonomic sitting. The height-adjustable backrest and armrests run in the same vertically aligned profile. This is decisive for the overall formal concept and enables sideways-oriented sitting positions. The synchronized mechanism reacts automatically to the user’s weight and initially provides maximum individual comfort. Further fine adjustments can be made quickly and easily using the barely visible but intuitively arranged controls. The upholstered backrest is available in three different heights; with a knitted mesh cover, it is available in one height. The color coordination of the components is divided into light and dark variants, which are available with matching functional armrests or elegant aluminum armrests. „In our eyes, the modern task chair has degenerated into an apparatus, a collection of controls and levers. That’s why our work focused on minimizing the visual impact of these elements. Our chair is easy to use and visually calm,“ says Edward Barber, describing the design process.

VITRA: AC 5 office swivel chair

Antonio Citterio, 2017

AC 5 Studio is the minimalist studio chair in the AC 5 Group office chair family. It is equipped with functions that serve its intended purpose: A rocking mechanism and height adjustment ensure pleasant comfort at workstations that are naturally only occupied for relatively short periods by changing users.

The characteristic, angled backrest of AC 5 Studio is not just a visual element that links it to the other members of the AC 5 Group. Thanks to its shape, the flexible construction provides plenty of freedom of movement and thus promotes dynamic sitting.

Rookie (2018) by Konstantin Grcic is a small, agile and – by office standards – unconventionally simple chair. With as few adjustments as possible, it immediately offers a pleasant level of comfort.

Physix by Alberto Meda is a visually and physically light office swivel chair whose construction ensures a high level of comfort: a high-tech textile is tensioned between two movable side bars.
