This winter we are once again visiting three homes: the loft of stylist Chris Glass, a house built by Walter Gropius that Barbara Happe and Martin Fischer have carefully restored, and the modern eco-country house of the Jüttner family. Each of these homes has its own character and individual history – underlined by the products from Vitra.
Chris Glass

Chris Glass searches for the stories behind the objects

„Everything has something to tell us. When I choose objects and furnishings for other people, part of the process is explaining their background to them so that they ‚come alive‘.“
„In my home, there are objects from the region of my youth and from the places where I lived. And then there’s what I collect on my travels. My home is like a mood board of beloved things, colors and fabrics that trigger memories – a mix of old and new, classic and provocative, unexpected objects.
I am not guided by trends. What seems more important to me is the art of production, the quality and a personal relationship with the object. This is how things come to life and stay alive for a long time.
I grew up with antiques in the house. My little brother and I shared a room, and I rearranged it every month. So it’s no wonder that this is what I do for a living today. At the weekends, we drove around the area with the whole family and looked at architecture and houses. These impressions have stuck with me.
You can create a space and furnish it beautifully, but it only comes to life when people interact with it. A home is a place where you are in harmony with yourself. It is not a geographical place, not defined by an address or four walls. Home is where you feel you have arrived. Where you feel safe and comfortable.“
Chris Glass is an Atlanta-born interior stylist and founder of aptm in Berlin, where he has lived since 2001.
Barbara Happe

Barbara Happe and Martin Fischer have given a house designed by Walter Gropius a new lease of life

„It’s a nice feeling to live in a monument and even nicer to know that it will continue to exist for a long time to come.“
„Walter Gropius only built six detached houses in Germany. The fact that we own one of them is a great gift. When we bought it in 1994, it was in a ruinous state and the garden was overgrown. We had to invest a lot to restore it to its original condition. To do this, we delved deep into the history of the house, researching books and archives. What colors were used? How was it furnished? We have always seen the house as a complete work of art that needs to be discovered further. We’ve been doing that for 27 years.
For Gropius, Bauhaus was not a style, but an attitude. For him, beauty manifested itself in all these things. For him, design meant clarity and lines. And doing without many things, such as green plants in the house. There are no curtains here. You can look in from outside.
In our bedroom there is a bed and two stools to the right and left of the bed. And no other furniture. Some people find this austerity irritating. We find it very graceful. Practicality is also beauty. The dialog between function and design of everyday things – and that includes furniture in particular – is what it’s all about. The design must be timeless, the function high-quality – only then do pieces of furniture have the quality to age with dignity.
It’s a nice feeling to live in a monument and even nicer to know that it will continue to exist for a long time to come. For us, it has nothing museum-like about it and we hope that this house never becomes a museum. It was built to live in.“
Martin Fischer is a professor of zoology, Barbara Happe is a cultural scientist. They have been married since 1987 and live and work in Jena.
Franziska and Simon Jüttner

For Simon and Franziska Jüttner, the robustness that allows things to age is an expression of quality.

„We like furniture that lasts a long time, that lives with us and is not a disposable product. We still want to like them in 20 years‘ time.“
„When we bought the house in the Allgäu in 2016, we quickly realized that we wanted to reuse as much of the substance as possible during the renovation: the exterior walls, the ceiling, doors, even old washbasins. At the same time, we didn’t want it to be a farmhouse like it was 200 years ago. For us, it was a field of experimentation to see how high-quality, sustainable materials can be used to build ecologically. Everything had to be either recyclable, compostable or incinerable without generating excessive costs. We opted for simple floorboards and unplastered brickwork.
We like furniture that lasts a long time, that lives with us and is not disposable. We still want to like it in 20 years‘ time. And ideally, our children will still like it. A chair has to be comfortable and robust, you have to be able to stand on it. When we still lived in the city, social interaction mostly took place in the café. In the country, depending on the time of year, people actually always meet at home or at friends‘ houses or in the garden. That’s why it was important for us to have a space where we could receive lots of guests, a table where lots of people could gather. That’s what makes a home for us: People who like to come in and out. People play at our table, do their homework, work and of course eat together. Children should be able to live here as children. The house simply has to tolerate that, all the scratches, stains and dents. It’s part of the atmosphere.“
Franziska Jüttner is a psychiatrist and her husband Simon is an architect. They live in Bad Hindelang, Bavaria.
HAL Lounge Chair by Jasper Morrison, 2021

With the HAL Lounge Chair, Vitra and Jasper Morrison have reinterpreted the upholstered high-back armchair on four legs. The armchair is compact and exceptionally comfortable. Loose seat and neck cushions or an integrated seat cushion ensure a soft seating experience.

Thanks to its understated design, the HAL Lounge Chair can be used as a single chair, in pairs or in groups. Design restraint does not mean neutrality: Jasper Morrison’s products are unmistakable and independent. Rather, restraint means that the HAL Lounge Chair radiates calm, does not go out of fashion and ages well. When some things that were created at the same time and seemed more exciting have long since faded, the formal quality of the chair becomes clear.

The HAL Ottoman is available to match the armchair. The covers of the HAL Lounge Chair and HAL Ottoman are removable.

A new level of comfort
There is hardly a better place to relax than a lounge chair: a piece of furniture that is made for leaning back, calming down and enjoying your home. The design of the new HAL Lounge Chair is understated, making it versatile for use at home or in public spaces. Design restraint does not mean neutrality:
Jasper Morrison’s products are independent and unmistakable. Rather, restraint means that they radiate calm, do not go out of fashion and age well. The HAL Lounge Chair is compact and yet exceptionally comfortable.

Eames Fiberglass Chair, new with seat upholstery Charles & Ray Eames, 1950

The Fiberglass Chairs came onto the market in 1950 and over the decades became one of the most famous furniture classics of the 20th century. After a long interruption, Vitra has been producing the legendary chairs by Charles and Ray Eames in the original material fiberglass again since 2018. All Eames Fiberglass Chairs are now also available with a seat cushion that ensures particularly good comfort. This form-foamed cushion is screwed to the seat shell and the upholstery is available in Checker fabric or Hopsak fabric in a wide range of colors. Nelson Bench George Nelson, 1946

The straightforward and clear design language of the Nelson ßench reflects George Nelson’s training as an architect. Like many other furniture classics, the bench designed by the legendary American mid-century designer in 1946 can be used flexibly and can also be used as a storage table.
Vitra is now launching a version of the Nelson ßench in which not only the base frame but also the characteristic ash slats of the seat and storage surface are painted black. I n this new, monochrome version, the Nelson ßench looks like a one-piece architectural element. It is available in two sizes.
Diamond Markers Clock George Nelson, 1948-1960

In the 1950s, George Nelson’s design studio set itself the goal of bringing modern design into American homes with a program of everyday objects. This included an extensive collection of wall clocks. The Diamond Markers Clock is a new addition to the selection of these wall clocks re-edited by Vitra. Its hour markers, reminiscent of diamonds in shape, are arranged around a rotating, printed aluminum plate to which the minute hand is attached. It is another model in the collection that demonstrates George Nelson and his team’s imaginative use of shapes and materials. Vitra’s wall clocks are equipped with a high-quality quartz movement and the large selection includes models to suit almost every taste.
„With the Diamond Markers wall clock, Vitra has added a new dimension to its portfolio of George Nelson timepieces. The geometric patterns give the sculpturally designed clock a graphically striking touch. The invisibly attached hands appear to float above the rotating dial and the diamond-shaped indices. This unique look makes Diamond Markers a fascinating addition to Vitra’s versatile clock collection, which is regularly updated and expanded.“
